Clarksons charts China loss

China’s shipbuilding industry has seen its newbuilding orderbook cut in half in the past two years with a staggering 90 yards running out of work, Clarksons says.

Only 153 yards in the country were considered still active at the end of 2012, down from 243 just 24 months earlier, data from the world’s largest shipbroker shows.

Yue Cheng of Clarksons says the figures come at the end of a year in which Chinese yards received the go ahead to build just 420 ships, a far cry from the 1,284 placed in 2010.

“Contracting is also becoming more consolidated: fewer yards are managing to gain new orders. One hundred and forty-nine shipyards received new orders in 2010, but during 2012 only 69 shipyards managed to take any contracts,” she wrote in a report.

She added: “So, Chinese yards now have significantly fewer vessels on order and indeed there are now 90 fewer yards with an orderbook than at the start of 2010.

“The weak bulk contracting environment means that plenty of other yards risk running out of work.”

At the start of 2013 Chinese yards had 1,832 vessels of a collective 109.4 million dwt to put together, down 47.3% on the beginning of 2010.

Daewoo profit plunges

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has posted an 82% fall in 2012 earnings as margins tightened.

The shipyard group said net profit last year was KRW 137bn ($125m), down from KRW 743bn in 2011, due largely to deliveries of lower-value ships contracted from 2009 on.

Investment losses and provisions for the operation of its Romanian yard also hit the bottom line, the company said.

Operating profit was down 55% to KRW 451.6bn, from KRW 1.01 trillion the year before.

Revenue edged up 2.5% to KRW 12.56 trillion.

It also cut its order target for 2013 as the shipping slump continued.

Daewoo is aiming for $13bn of new business, against a recorded intake of $14.3bn in 2012.
